Letter to the Editor: Social Groups and Belonging
submitted by a GISS Student High school is a place where we learn more about ourselves and figure out, to a certain extent, who we are. However, sometimes it can feel like we end up changing, but not for ourselves. Whether it's what we wear, what we listen to, or who we choose to have lunch with, there's always this quiet pressure to ‘fit in.’ Peer pressure isn't always that obvious. Sometimes it can be easy to spot, like a friend daring you to do something you’re not comfort

Grad vs Staff Volleyball Game
By Ocea McClean At our lovely Gulf Islands Secondary School, the staff and the grad class compete in games against each other throughout the year. Usually, they play sports like basketball, volleyball, soccer, dodgeball, or softball. But lately, there's has been talk of trying out new games such as Capture the Flag or a Trivia Quiz to switch things up. Stay tuned for this. This past month, on October 6th, GISS hosted a Staff vs. Grads volleyball match in the gym. It was a

Social Media and Screen Time for Teens Today
by Neko Paige On average, the normal teen’s screen time is 7 hours per day or 25, 200 seconds. That is more than the usual recommended hours for a good night’s rest. The most popular apps like Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok are all apps that use a scrolling motion that shortens the attention span and draws you in, making teens and even adults more inclined to be dependent on the app. Social media like Pinterest and other apps are also able to be used in a educational way, it

GISS Fashion
by Sacha Miller Here at GISS, fashion plays a huge part in how students express themselves. We see many people dress differently, but one style stands out in terms of popularity; a specific vintage clothing style has been dominating the halls since last year. Brands like Carhartt, Levis, Adidas, and Stussy seem to be the most popular among the students. Despite being so popular, this style is often seen as basic. Unfortunately, there is not much personalized taste when tryin

An Article for the Adults:
Who is using Gen Alpha slang more, millennials or Gen Alpha? Submitted by a GISS Student Overall, I have seen a small uptick in the number of adults attempting to use slang that they really shouldn't use. For example, at what point did it become okay for adults to dress as a 6, 7 for Halloween? Adults seem to try and use words that were not made up by their generation. And trust me, they were not made up in their generation for a reason. When I spoke to student Morgan Willia

Editorial Nov 12, 2025: Kids these days....
By Mr. Massey, Interim Editor in Chief We’ve all heard it: Kids today aren’t as motivated. They don’t commit like they used to. They’re always on their phones. Maybe we’ve even said it ourselves. But what if those observations are only part of the story? In Kids These Days , Dr. Jody Carrington suggests that what looks like distraction or disinterest might actually be disconnection. Life feels faster, louder, and more uncertain than ever, and that can take a toll on everyon

Senior Girls Volleyball
by Juliana Lange So far, the GISS Senior Girls' Volleyball Team has had a very chaotic season, filled with ups and downs. They have showed determination in their last tournament pulling through with a few wins. Why Math Matters
By Hannah Busgang Gulf Islands Secondary School has Mathematics courses which are needed to graduate. There is Foundations of Math, Pre-calculus, Calculus and Workplace Math. But let’s be honest, math isn't everyone's favourite subject. For some people, it’s like a jumble of numbers and letters that seem to only make sense to teachers and calculators. But surprisingly, math has a purpose beyond just solving for x. At our school, we offer tons of math courses for different l
