Approaching Finals Week
by Izzie Rudgley Now that we reach the midpoint of the school year, there is one thing on every student’s mind: finals week. Students find it especially hard to pay attention during this time of year because so many things are going on at once. With the relaxation of winter break still lingering in recently memory and the weather changing, many students are finding it difficult to stay motivated. Whether they are a Grade 8 student anxious about their first high school exam or

New Year's Resolutions
Submitted by Daylin Kodaly As a new year is starting at GISS, and students are making New Year resolutions. Some resolutions can be good ideas, and some might not be. An example of a resolution that might not be a good idea is an unrealistic resolution like cutting out all sugar from your diet or losing 20 pounds every month; these types of resolutions are unrealistic because it is nearly impossible to not eat sugar, with it existing in over 70% of all food, and constantly lo

Jr Boys A Basketball
Sophie Wertman and Ever Wirth The Jr Boys A Basketball team season started off to a rocky start with their first game against Quw’wutsun. The final score was 69-32, a loss for us. Although they lost, the score doesn’t reflect how they played together and represented GISS values. They were able to quickly bounce back in their tournament later that weekend, facing three different teams and ended up getting 2nd place. They’ve had numerous more games and tournaments that they’ve

Album Review: Let God Sort Em Out by Clipse
by Levi McGrath Over the past year, numerous incredible albums have been released by a variety of artists and musicians. Personally, a genre that I’ve been very immersed in this year has been hip-hop. In my opinion, one of the strongest albums of this genre that has been released within the last year, is “Let God Sort Em Out”, by Clipse. Clipse is a duo, featuring the two brothers Pusha T and Malice. Since 2009, these two have been working separately on their own careers. How

Silent Judgment
Submitted Anonymously What is the dress code at GISS? While GISS may not have an official dress code, there is somewhat of an unspoken set of rules. For example... jeans or PJ pants only (maybe the occasional black leggings). No rain boots or snow boots; better options are sneakers, Uggs, cool leather boots, etc. While these opinions may be unspoken, they are real. If you don’t fit into these categories, you may not be a real high school student.

World Cup Soccer Intramurals
by Rachel Skinner and Juliana Lange As the soccer season slows down, students and teachers have been looking for more opportunities to play the sport they love. With this in mind, our Student Leadership class with the help of Mr. Shugar, designed a World Cup Soccer tournament. Teams played Wednesdays at lunch for thirty minutes against opposing competitors. Representing France was a selection of teachers, while the other three teams, England, Spain, and Argentina, consisted

Retention vs Recall
by Maggie McKenzie and Kash Robinson Late night or early morning cramming. We’ve most likely all done it at least once before taking a significant test or quiz. That’s alright, but we need to understand where cramming actually works, and where it doesn’t help you in the long run. Why it might work (as a last resort) Cramming can help solidify your understanding of already learned materials, if you review them a few times before taking the test. Studies show that students

GISS Hosts Post Secondary Mini Fair
By Ocea McClean A few weeks back, our school hosted a mini fair featuring many universities and colleges from across British Columbia. Even though the event only lasted a short amount of time, it had a huge impact on students thinking about their futures. For many of us, it was the first time we were able to speak directly with admissions reps, ask honest questions, and learn what different programs provide for students. One of the most valuable outcomes of the fair was expo
