As the soccer season slows down, students and teachers have been looking for more opportunities to play the sport they love. With this in mind, our Student Leadership class with the help of Mr. Shugar, designed a World Cup Soccer tournament. Teams played Wednesdays at lunch for thirty minutes against opposing competitors. Representing France was a selection of teachers, while the other three teams, England, Spain, and Argentina, consisted of students. On December 3rd Spain and France played in the semifinals, resulting in a 9-2 win for Spain. The following Wednesday, the second semifinals was played featuring England and Argentina; with the winning team to face Spain in the final on December 17th.
England and Argentina had a riveting match, where Argentina was up 3-1, but England managed to put their best foot forward, tying the score 3-3. This resulted in penalties where Cameron, a grade 9 student, shot the winning goal for Argentina, moving them on to the final against Spain.
The championship game showed more exciting action! At the final whistle, Argentina was victorious and were awarded the giant World Cup Trophy.
This activity not only creates friendly competition between peers and teachers but also brings new opportunities to step out of your comfort zone and bring people together. We would like to thank all the teams and hope you had fun showcasing your skills and improvement.
