The girls basketball season has officially kicked off with the Senior Girls playing away, against Ladysmith on Tuesday December 2nd; followed by a tournament on December 4th to 6th at Dover Bay and the Junior Girls playing Wednesday at December 3rd vs Quamichan. Each team has been practicing two times a week in order to improve and prepare for this season. This is what some of the players have shared so far: “I am confident in my team for our upcoming games, but we have much to improve on before we reach our full potential,” said Mikayla Langdon, Grade 9 Student. Nomi Deroos, a Grade 10 on the Senior team, says that “As confident as I am in the team I don't think I will be getting much playing time when playing with the grads, but I know we will make it far.” Each team is excited for the season ahead and are all ensuring to put their best foot forward to encourage their team and lead them to victory.
In December, the Senior Girls had a tournament in Nanaimo and battled hard over the course of three days with a win against Ladysmith (44-17), leading them into the semifinal against Dover Bay. Unfortunately, they lost by 6 points. but battled hard. On Saturday, they played Brentwood and won by 23 with the final score of 65-42. Overall, the girl’s defense really carried them throughout all their games and placed them 3rd overall in the tournament. Congrats seniors! We hope your success carries on in the season. `
The Junior Girls had their first game against Quamichan, where they played their hearts out but unfortunately lost 38-29. Although they didn't come out with a win, there was much improvement, especially for the new players joining this season. They built more connections with teammates and gave them a chance to strengthen their bond, which will ultimately project onto the court, making them more unified.
