Back in the nineties, GISS had a student magazine with a wonderfully chaotic, wonderfully perfect name: GISS What? Every time I come across an old copy, I’m struck by the creativity, the boldness, and the very “GISS-ness” of it. When our team first dreamed up bringing student journalism back to life, we toyed with reviving that name. In the end, we decided to lean into another piece of our school’s journalistic history: ‘The STING,’ a title that felt sharp, energetic, and ready for a new era.
But GISS What? We’re now on Issue 3, and you can already see a slow and steady evolution taking shape. The design team is refining each issue with more intentional colour choices and stronger design elements. The articles are digging deeper. The interview questions are getting more thoughtful. The content is becoming more creative, more humorous, and more directly connected to the audience we’re actually trying to reach: our school community.
Our hope is to continue this steady upward trend: to make The STING something students look for, talk about, and feel proud of. We want it to reflect who we are as a school: what matters to us, what stories we think are worth telling, and how we believe our community will connect with the voices and perspectives inside these pages. This is, at its heart, a student newspaper, and it should feel like it. It should speak with the energy, curiosity, humour, and honesty of the people who create it.
So as we keep building, keep experimenting, and keep improving, we carry a little of that nineties inspiration with us. Because in the end, the question that old magazine asked still feels just right for today’s students and storytellers:
GISS What?
We’ve only just begun.
