Editorial May 20, 2026: Do Beautiful Work
by Ryan Massey, Interim Editor in Chief Spring has a certain feel in schools. The light shifts, the energy changes, and there is a sense that things are coming together after a long year. It can also be a busy and sometimes stressful time, with deadlines, assessments, and the push toward the finish line. But it is also a moment worth noticing. There is something special about this time of year. Classes feel a little more connected. Learning can feel more real. There are more

GISS What????
By Mr. Massey, Interim Editor-in-Chief Back in the nineties, GISS had a student magazine with a wonderfully chaotic, wonderfully perfect name: GISS What? Gabby Moreno (10), a TASK student, explains a little bit more about what they are actually doing there. She says her class is spending six weeks total at Camosun with a break every two weeks where they will be learn

Grad Interview: Violet Miller
by Leelu Mann Being a grad, Violet Miller has experienced a lot that GISS has to offer, from being on the leadership team, to being the photo head for the creation of the Yearbook this year. I decided to interview Violet because she represents the values that GISS prides themselves on; community, creativity, and learning. She has shown that she cares for others and the quality of student life. The first question I asked was “Which grade was the most challenging?” to which sh

The Media Lab Scene
What are all the things we do in the Media Lab, and how do people like it? by Maggie McKenzie, Levi McGrath, Kash Robinson This year, the Media Lab team has been hard at work, providing the school with a well-crafted newspaper, an entertaining podcast, and the start of our Yearbook. The Media Lab class often operates like an office. We all have our designated seats that we consistently go to when we enter the room. Many people choose to work with classmates for collaborativ

Retention vs Recall
by Maggie McKenzie and Kash Robinson Late night or early morning cramming. We’ve most likely all done it at least once before taking a significant test or quiz. That’s alright, but we need to understand where cramming actually works, and where it doesn’t help you in the long run. Why it might work (as a last resort) Cramming can help solidify your understanding of already learned materials, if you review them a few times before taking the test. Studies show that students
