The music programs at the school host multiple shows throughout the year. Like all productions, there is always a great deal of preparation and organization, both within the program and behind the scenes. But have you ever stopped to think about what actually happens before a show comes together?
Most people only see the advertisements leading up to a concert or performance. They don’t often think about what happens behind the scenes, either because they aren’t part of it or don’t fully understand how the program works. In reality, a lot has to happen before a show is ready to be promoted and performed. There are many steps involved in bringing a production to life and making it known to the wider community.
Hana Ishikawa (10) explains, “Even if I am not part of the preparation of the show, getting the music and practicing the pieces with the band takes many weeks to complete and smooth everything out so it can be ready to perform.”
There are many moving parts involved in making a production successful, and promotion plays a huge role. It is just as important as the performers themselves. First, the performing group sets the dates for the show, a step that happens within the program. Then, they decide how to promote it and gather the key information that needs to be shared. One of the most common methods for bands and music productions is the traditional approach of posters and flyers. These are placed in high-traffic areas or handed out directly to people.
Posters are often displayed around the school, in town, and in other public spaces to help spread the word and build awareness.
Micha Blondahl (12) speaks to the importance of promotion: “Being part of multiple GISS groups, like any performing arts group, there is always some type of organizing to advertise the show to the town. Without posters, flyers, or advertisements on Instagram or any social media platform, there would be no show.”
Promotion is a key part of making any performance a success. Announcements on the GISS Instagram page help spread the word and give the community a heads-up about upcoming shows, whether it’s Concert Band, Jazz Band, Jazz Combo, or GISPA. Every performance relies on some form of promotion, whether on paper or online, to connect with an audience and bring the show to life.
