In recent weeks, the TASK class has taken off to Camosun College to learn various technical skills related to trades. From learning how to solder metal, to taking pipe trade courses, the TASK class has been learning skilled trades at a college level.
Gabby Moreno (10), a TASK student, explains a little bit more about what they are actually doing there. She says her class is spending six weeks total at Camosun with a break every two weeks where they will be learning carpentry at GISS. So far, they have learned about pipe trades, plumbing, and pipe fitting among other things, and have also built or started to build toolboxes out of both metal and wood, a sawhorse, a copper candle holder and a full size garden shed. Gabby says she is really looking forward to the automotive unit they are doing next and finds the facilities and overall learning environment, as well as the food and all the interesting new tools they are learning to use, very exciting.
However, one thing that Gabby and other TASK students have mentioned finding difficult is the traveling they do between Camosun and Salt Spring every day, which causes students to get home at later times. Gabby says the main reason she joined TASK was to learn useful skills that she can use in her everyday life even after graduating. So far, she thinks the people in TASK are on a good path towards their goals and recommends joining TASK to almost anyone who wants to go into the trades or finds the normal school system difficult for the way they work.
If you find any of this interesting or think you know someone who would, talk to Shari Hambrook at the Career Programs Office, by the library, to join the waiting list or choose it on next year’s course selection sheet.
