The Student Council, often confused with Leadership, has been tirelessly working on

addressing the concerns of student life. Since their re-establishment over the past few years, the Student Council has acted as a tool for those hoping to make meaningful changes in our school environment.

“Student Council strives to amplify student voice, build unity, and create a school community where every student feels valued.”

-Jasmine Pamintuan, Student Council Co-President

Student Council is open to anyone who wants to join as an opportunity to support

and express YOUR concerns about the school. Some current topics of discussion within the Council have been the exchange program, emergency drills, outer islands student experiences, and deeper learning.

This year, the Council has also begun to further their involvement with the school

district board meetings; via presentations and Q&As, they bring student representation straight our Board of Education Trustees. This is just one of the many ways that the Student Council has taken initiative to expand their reach.

After conducting numerous student interviews at GISS, they have found it apparent that most of our student body has yet to understand the various functions and goals of the Student Council. Increasing their presence and building more connections within the school is one of the Council’s current priorities.

“Being a member of the Student Council has been an extremely valuable experience. The opportunity to take initiative, address important issues, and collaborate with students, staff, and our community, is unique and worthwhile.”

- Kalliope Abbott, Student Council Co-President

The Student Council will be holding an ‘Open House’ meeting on Thursday, May 21st. This opportunity aims to help increase student interest and involvement. If you have any questions about how the council operates, are curious about the experience, are thinking about joining next year, or simply want to kill some time during lunch break, you are encouraged to attend. We meet in room N207. Come by and check it out!
