At GISS, we are lucky enough to have a full cafeteria and Culinary Arts courses that teach students how to cook snacks, full meals, sweet treats and more!

Led by Chef Kilner, the Culinary Arts Program at GISS gives students the opportunity to explore all aspects of food preparation. Students prepare the food and then help with the cooking. They also run the cafeteria during lunch hour, serving food, and taking payments. Students are well provided with large meals to sustain them throughout the long school day. For a good price as well. Very affordable and good-tasting meals.

Not just cooking, students learn skills like cleaning up the cafeteria, doing dishes, and putting dishes away. To be allowed into the kitchen, students take a Food Safe Course. If you pass, you will receive your Food Safe, and your certification will last for 4 years.

Once certified, you’ll be put it into the kitchen. You’ll cook things like pasta, pizza, burgers, etc. You will learn real life skills and good recipes you can take into your future.

If you’re worried about cooking alone, don’t worry, you’ll have Fiona and Cheyenne as well. Fiona is the pastries helper, and Cheyenne is the cold side helper. They work in the cafeteria and help answer any questions you have and guide you thought how to make different recipes. They are amazing people, and very friendly.

If you enjoy cooking and baking, treats or meals for yourself, family, or friends, this is a class for you. This class is fun, the teacher and helpers are nice, and this would be a great class for you to take!

Chef’s Interview:

Hannah: Why did you want to become a teacher at GISS?

Chef: I wanted to become a teacher because I didn’t want to work 80 hours a week only making minimum wage, and my dad taught for 38 years.

Hannah: What’s your favourite meal to serve the students?

Chef: Tomato soup / SOOOOUP DAYYY!
